MELBOURNE, 27 November 2025:

Intelematics, a leading provider of eCall and connected vehicle services across Australia and New Zealand welcomes ANCAP’s decision to include eCall in its safety assessment protocols.

eCall, an in-vehicle crash detection, will form part of ANCAP’s 2026–2028 ‘post-crash’ safety category within the new four ‘Stages of Safety’ scheme.

Activated by vehicle sensors, including airbag and rollover, eCall uses onboard telemetry technology to transmit essential incident data, including crash information, geolocation and establish a voice connection from the vehicle within seconds, helping enable a faster and more informed emergency response.

Intelematics delivers eCall services to the Australian and New Zealand automotive industry. Currently Intelematics supports over 900,000 connected vehicles across major automotive brands, including Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Genesis.

Rob Finney, General Manager at Intelematics, said: “This is a pivotal moment for the automotive sector in Australia and New Zealand. ANCAP’s decision brings us one step closer to a more proactive, connected, and consistent safety framework”.

Finney added, “It’s a major step forward in how our region approaches vehicle safety. It signals that the market is ready for advanced in-car technology and increasingly confident in connected vehicle capabilities.

eCall is no longer just a European innovation, it’s becoming a global road safety standard. Since 2018, eCall has been mandatory for all new cars and light vans sold in the European Union, with regulators in Russia, the UAE, China and parts of North America also progressing adoption. Australian and New Zealand road users are now able to benefit from these same internationally proven technologies, ensuring our region remains aligned with global best practice in road safety”.

Katherine Anderson, Senior Product Manager at Intelematics, said:
“Two-thirds of Australian road fatalities occur in rural and remote areas, often involving single-car, high-speed crashes. In these situations, time is critical, and having eCall may be the only chance of survival.

“Our research shows eCall could save up to 200 lives and prevent 2,500 serious injuries every year. With every road death, we are reminded why integrating eCall into new vehicle assessment protocols is so critical to protecting our communities and a vital step toward meeting national road safety targets” Anderson added.

Intelematics’ connected car platform that powers eCall, Automatic Collision Notification (ACN) and SOS Emergency Call services was recognised with gold in two categories at the Australian Good Design Awards, reinforcing its leadership in both product and digital design.
