The client

With a member base of over three million, RACV is recognised as one of the leading lifestyle brands in Australia. It operates in a wide range of areas, including motoring and mobility, home, leisure, financial services and general insurance. Whilst historically known for its motor services and advocacy, RACV has pivoted in recent years towards providing holistic transport solutions for its members and all Victorians.

The challenge – Victorians’ mobility needs are changing

Government and industry leaders have long recognised that Victorians’ transport preferences are changing. Younger travellers, in particular, are seeking out journey planners that link together multiple modes of transport such as public transport, bikes and rideshare. Car travellers are also seeking convenient ways to find the lowest petrol prices and local parking options.

With these trends in mind, Intelematics worked closely with RACV to rebuild their arevo Journey Planning app, enabling RACV to engage more with Millennial and Gen Z commuters and also puts user experience at its very core.

The Solution – A rebuilt mobility app to engage with a younger audience

In 2018, RACV embarked on an exciting new project – the development of a mobility app called arevo. The app was designed to help Victorians plan journeys more efficiently across multiple modes of transport, ranging from public transport and ride shares to private cars and bikes. Whilst arevo launched with great success in 2019 and was embraced by its members, RACV recognised that the app needed to adapt to the changing mobility preferences of the younger population. RACV approached Intelematics to rebuild the arevo app to help improve the user experience of planning journeys in real-time and to connect arevo users to the broader RACV ecosystem.

During the nine-month development phase, Intelematics took the lead in building the “brains” behind the route-planning engine that powers the arevo app. This route-planning engine processes a wide range of travel data from third-party sources to deliver an app that builds intelligence into route planning and allows the user to personalise travel preferences (eg. walking, cycling, car and public transport). In addition, the app enables RACV to engage more with potential customers by offering special offers and discounts from a range of local businesses.

Other new features of the app include:

 • Easy access to view live public transport departure times and disruptions
 • A new dashboard that connects users to petrol prices and parking availability
 • A cleaner map interface

“Intelematics are really good at taking complex business requirements and translating that into a product we can actually use. They also set up an excellent dashboard that provides monitoring and alerts us to any problems with the app. In addition, Intelematics brought strong skills in cloud technology and also lean, agile techniques that allow greater ease of updating the app in the future.”

Intelematics brings deep expertise in route-planning and real-time traffic data

With decades of experience in mobility, travel data and maps, Intelematics was well placed to deliver on this project. Intelematics has strong niche expertise in developing mobility solutions and the provision of real-time data to help people move around in the most convenient way.

Elizabeth Kim, GM, arevo Mobility, RACV, said, “Intelematics are really good at taking complex business requirements and translating that into a product we can actually use. They also set up an excellent dashboard that provides monitoring and alerts us to any problems with the app”. “In addition, Intelematics brought strong skills in cloud technology and also lean, agile techniques that allow greater ease of updating the app in the future,” she added.

A dynamic future roadmap of additional capability has been planned for the arevo app, with new releases planned on a regular basis. Ultimately the plan is for the app to cater to all mobility needs, including the ability to make payments to transport providers. Greater functionality in terms of micro-mobility, such as the use of scooters and bikes, will be built in.

Also, a greater emphasis on cycling within the app will link into broader government plans to build additional bike lanes across Melbourne. arevo will help encourage “greener” forms of transport so that Australia can move towards meeting greenhouse emissions targets. Importantly, Intelematics will provide ongoing managed services to ensure the arevo app is always available, secure and supported.

The Results
