Key highlights from Chief Data & Analytics Officer Conference, Melbourne

Recently, I attended the Chief Data & Analytics Officer event in Melbourne.
With over 300 delegates from the likes of Macquarie Bank, Netflix and Telstra, it was a fantastic opportunity to share both local and global experiences within data science and data analytics.

I was also fortunate to be a panellist in a session that examined pain points within data analytics when it comes to building out the analytics team capabilities; in addition to the technical aspects that underpin data analytics, we also explored the best way to nurture talent within the industry and the importance of having the right skillset.

The event’s major highlight was a presentation by Peter Gray, Senior Director of Technology, Sports Practice at Dimension Data. He shared details regarding the development of improved data analytics offerings for consumption by the Tour de France 2017 viewership and media channels (both traditional and also digital & social media), featuring examples of real-time driver and tour analytics made possible through leveraging data for analytics.

In this year’s Tour de France competition, Dimension Data equipped cyclists with a GPS that enabled live tracking with real-time and predictive analytics to give spectators a new immersive experience at every stage of the race. The data was also fed directly into social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook etc.

One key observation from the conference is that , despite the investment that is being made in the field of data science, many businesses are still in the early stages of building up a solid data analytics capability. Challenges included: introduction of new technology, getting business buy-in, difficulty in attributing value to data insights, as well as finding and fostering the right talent. Overcoming these issues will be key to success in the future.
